John
Sandford
took up bass guitar rather late in life. A mid life crisis some
people called it, and it was
certaiinly quite a departure from his lifelong association with choral
music and organ playing. His insipration was the unique talents of Chris
Squire, bassist with Yes, himself a former cathedral chorister, who made
John realise that the bass guitar cuold 'sing' and that it was quite OK
for bassists to look like they were enjoying themselves on stage!
John is still developing his style, but prefers the 'anchor man' role,
laying down a solid foundation over which other instrumenatalists can
weave their magic. He has a particular style of playing as characterised
by the 'Sandford hop', a quirky raising of the left leg in the style of a
dog about to relieve himself.
John particular likes the harmonic blend that the four vocalists within
the band can achieve. This is the 'usp' that sets the Beamers apart from
other local bands. He hopes to be able to write some new music for the
band to perform once they have sorted ot which particular genre of music
they want to concentrate on!
